Mission Statement : The Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) is part of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and accurately covers the sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia. Since communications suffers soonest havoc strikes, IRIN reporting focuses on strengthening universal access to timely, strategic and unbiased information, to assist the humanitarian agents to understandingly respond to and avert emergencies. IRIN counters misinformation and propaganda, and fosters efforts at restoring peace. IRIN does not seek to duplicate or redistribute the current news output of existing media organisations, but to enhance it with further analysis and details of essential interest to the humanitarian and disaster-relief community. Information sharing is a vital component in this goal. Summaries of relevant UN and NGO reports, among others, are often included in IRIN reports with information on how to access the original document. By so doing, IRIN offers subscribers a solution to "information overload". Les Réseaux d'Information Régionaux Intégrés (IRIN), rattaché au bureau de l'ONU pour la Coordination des affaires humanitaires (OCHA) répond aux besoins d'informations précises sur les événements survenant sur le terrain. IRIN s'attache à diffuser des informations utiles, stratégiques et objectives afin de renforcer la capacité de la communauté humanitaire à comprendre, réagir et éviter les situations d'urgence. Par ailleurs, IRIN soutient les efforts consentis en vue du règlement des conflits et de la réconciliation en faisant contre-poids à la propagande et à la distribution d'informations erronées. IRIN, créé au départ pour la région des Grands Lacs, s'est rapidement étendu en Afrique de l'Est, en Afrique de l'Ouest, en Afrique du Sud, sur toute la Corne de l'Afrique et plus récemment en Asie centrale. IRIN ne cherche pas à dupliquer ou à redistribuer les dépêches émanant des organes de presse mais s'efforce plutôt d'apporter des analyses et des précisions intéressant spécifiquement la communauté humanitaire et les spécialistes chargés des secours en cas de catastrophes. L'échange d'informations constitue l'élément essentiel de cet objectif. En outre, IRIN cite souvent dans ses reportages des résumés de comptes-rendus pertinents produits par l'ONU ou des ONG et indique en fin de document l'adresse électronique permettant d'accéder au rapport intégral. IRIN offre ainsi à ses abonnés une solution à la "surabondance d'informations".

[FRANÇAIS ci-dessous] IRIN services are provided free-of-charge and are available in a range of forms, including analytical reports, fact sheets, interviews, daily country updates and weekly summaries in English, French and Kiswahili. Contents and topics are very wide: the news can be selected on a geographical basis (Africa as a whole or regional packages: East Africa, Great Lakes, Horn of Africa, Southern Africa and West Africa) or on by topics (Children, Democracy and governance, Economy, Environment, Food security, Gender issues, Health and nutrition, HIV/Aids, Human Rights, Natural disasters, Peace and security, Refugees). The Asia section covers Central Asia and Iraq crisis. A growing numbers of additional products are also available on the IRIN web site: * Web specials on prospects of peace in Sudan, on life in Northern Uganda, on child soldiers, on Cabinda. * Country profiles and audio-visual presentations including maps, graphics and photographs. * IRIN Radio (see presentation on the TRRAACE resources under the headline "Bank of programs"). The IRIN web site proposes a special HIV/Aids News Service called "PlusNews". This special section provides news, information and analysis on the struggle being waged against HIV/AIDS across Africa, including coverage of the wealth of community-based activities, government initiatives and donor programmes targeting the pandemic. The overarching goal of the service is to help build sustainable information networks between organisations on the ground - especially those representing people living with HIV and AIDS - to promote the local sharing of knowledge and experience. The PlusNews services include: News service, Newsletter, country profiles and Radio news briefs: PlusNews has developed a "rip-and-read" HIV/AIDS news service for radio broadcasters available via e-mail, the PlusNews web site and the radio service of the global news agency, Inter Press Service. It is also distributed directly by IRIN to selected community radio stations in South Africa. All these products are available through the IRIN web site at www.irinnews.org and an e-mail distribution service. To subscribe, click "Subscribe" on the menu. IRIN Subscription options include : (1) Immediate Delivery Option : daily articles sent as individual e-mails as they are available; (2) Once-A-Day Delivery Option : daily articles are compiled into one e-mail at the end of the day (3) Weekly Option : choice of preset regional weekly round-ups. All these options propose the news in full, or just the title and the first lines with a link to the news on the web site. _____________________FRANÇAIS Les services d'IRIN sont gratuits et disponibles sous différentes formes : reportages analytiques, fiches documentaires, interviews, bulletins quotidiens de pays et rapports hebdomadaires en anglais, français et kiswahili. Les informations en français sur l’Afrique peuvent être sélectionnées soit sur une base régionale (Afrique Centrale, Afrique de l'est, Afrique de l'ouest) soit thématique (Catastrophes naturelles, Démocratie et gouvernance, Droits de l'homme, Economie, Egalité entre les sexes, Enfants, Environnement, Paix et sécurité, Réfugiés et déplacés, Santé et nutrition, Sécurité alimentaire, VIH/Sida). La page d’accueil francophone (http://www.irinnews.org/Frenchfp.asp) propose aussi des articles spéciaux. Sur son site, IRIN met à disposition des produits plus diversifiés et pointus, mais en anglais seulement : des présentations audio-visuelles comprenant des cartes géographiques, des graphiques et des photographies, des informations spécifiques - sous la rubrique « Web Special » - à propos du processus de paix au Sudan, de la vie dans le Nord de l’Ouganda, des les enfants soldats, etc. Ou encore la section « PlusNews » spécifiquement dédiée au SIDA. Ces informations sont disponibles sur le site Internet d'IRIN, www.irinnews.org par le biais d'un réseau de distribution électronique qui propose différentes options permettant d'échapper à la surabondance d'informations. Options d'abonnement : (1) Option de distribution immédiate: les articles du jour sont envoyés un par un dès leur parution (2) Option de distribution une fois par jour: les bulletins quotidiens sont regroupés sur un seul e-mail en fin de journée.
